Still stumped on how to incorporate coconut oil into your hair regimen? Or maybe you’re wondering why you should go through that extra trouble.

First, here is a rundown of the benefits of using organic coconut oil to condition your hair. These benefits can apply to all hair types (naturally curly, chemically treated, short, fine, etc.)

  • Coconut oil strengthens the hair and helps to prevent your hair from breakage and split ends.
  • You will have super soft hair.
  • Using coconut oil as a deep conditioner will help repair hair that is dry and brittle.
  • Coconut oil promotes hair growth and minimizes excessive hair shedding.
  • Coconut oil’s antifungal properties makes this oil a natural cure for dandruff. It also moisturizes dry scalp
  • Now that coconut oil has become a common household product, you can find it anywhere. The prices for organic coconut oil are very competitive.

How do I use coconut oil as a deep conditioner?

First, I always use organic unrefined coconut oil. It’s really not that much more expensive than refined coconut oil, plus it is more pure.

In times past I would add coconut oil to my deep conditioner. Now it’s pretty much the other way around. 🙂

After shampooing my hair, I let my hair air dry for about 5 to 10 minutes. The coconut oil conditioning blend seems to penetrate my hair better if it is not dripping wet.

I mix one part hair conditioner and one part coconut oil in a plastic or glass bowl. If you have fine hair you may want to start with adding 2 to 3 teaspoons of coconut oil to 1 cup of conditioner, depending on the length of your hair.

After applying the deep conditioning mix to my hair, I cover with a plastic cap and let it sit for at least 30 to 40 minutes. If you don’t have that much time, 15 minutes is better than nothing.

If I want a really deep treatment, I sit under a heated dryer.

Next, I completely rinse the coconut oil deep conditioning blend from my hair with warm water and then a shot of cool water. Rinsing may take a few minutes, but make sure all product is rinsed out.

My hair is never greasy afterwards. Since this is usually my last rinse before styling, I use cool water to lock in the moisture from the coconut oil and conditioner.

How do I use coconut oil as a deep conditioner without conditioner?

If you want a completely natural deep conditioning experience, you can use coconut oil alone.

On occasion I apply coconut oil to my hair before shampooing. You can apply coconut oil to dry hair, let it condition overnight (cover hair with plastic caps to protect your pillows), and shampoo your hair in the morning!

For a while I strayed from adding coconut oil to my deep conditioner and I could really tell the difference. I did not have as much growth and my hair was not nearly as soft.

Never again will I stray from using oil in my wash day routine!

Extra virgin olive oil, wheat germ oil, grapeseed oil and sunflower oil are also favorites of mine for deep conditioning.

Hair conditioners that I love adding to coconut oil include:

  • Sally Beauty Supply GVP Conditioning Balm
  • ORS Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner
  • Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Conditioning Treatment
  • Silk Elements Mega Cholesterol Conditioning Treatment
  • Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner
  • TRESemme’ Botanique Nourish & Replenish Conditioner

Have I mentioned that I am a recovering hair product junkie? 😉

Coconut Oil Hair Treatment

Coconut Oil Hair Treatment

When I think back to my hair’s happier days, there was one key ingredient that made a world of difference. It is the oil that inspired this blog and my passion for hair and skin care.

Coconut oil is the one oil that remains in my beauty pantry at all times.

I did my first coconut oil hair treatment in the summer of 2014. Within three months my hair grew to its longest length. It was incredibly soft and I experienced very little breakage.

Why I ever strayed away from this treatment is beyond me. I suppose I’m one of those product junkies that always on the lookout for the next big hair miracle.

Last year I had a set back in growth. My ends were severely split and damaged. The only remedy was to cut the length I gained in 2014. Now that I have recovered, I am ready to grow again.

They say that you don’t know what you have until its gone. Since me and my coconut oil hair treatment have been like two ships passing in the night, my hair misses the strength, shine and luster.

Along with my other natural hair growth aids, I will settle in again with my coconut oil hair treatment.

It’s very simple to do. However, real results require consistency.

Coconut Oil Hair Treatment Recipe

  1. Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil (1 to 2 Tablespoons)… really as much as you’d like depending on the length of your hair
  2. Your favorite moisturizing deep conditioner ( I love the Sally’s GVP Moisturizing Conditioner that is comparable to Nexxus Humectress Moist Conditioner)
  3. Mix together in a plastic or glass bowl

Coconut Oil Hair Treatment Application

  1. Apply treatment to the full length of your hair
  2. Cover hair with a plastic shower cap or deep conditioning cap
  3. Allow hair to deep condition for 30 to 45 minutes (I usually leave the treatment in my hair for a couple of hours while I clean or cook)
  4. Rinse thoroughly

Use this treatment to deep condition your hair 1 to 2 times each week and that’s it! Remember the consistency factor! 🙂

After the first month you should definitely be able to tell a difference in the health of your hair. This coconut oil hair treatment was most effective for my hair when using twice each week.

It’s a simple extra step that will make an enormous difference if you suffer from dry and/or damaged hair. If your hair is already healthy, this deep conditioning treatment will take it to the next level.

How to apply your coconut oil hair treatment?

  • Apply coconut oil to dry hair before going to bed.
  • Cover hair with a plastic cap or two…to condition the hair and prevent coconut oil from dripping on your pillow
  • In the morning shampoo and condition your hair as normal

Coconut oil benefits the hair and scalp in many ways. Coconut oil is great for preventing split ends. If you suffer from dandruff or dry scalp, you should see a difference in the condition of your scalp as well!

If I have not yet convinced you to love coconut oil the way I do, there are other oils that make for wonderful hair treatments and masks.

Sweet almond oil, avocado oil and extra virgin olive oil are full of nutrients and fatty acids that strengthen and protects the hair from future damage. The icing on the cake is that all of these oils are affordable and cost-effective.

Give this coconut oil hair treatment a go and make your hair smile!
